• In an effort to upgrade this route to near-Interstate status, sections have been bypassed with the old sections being reassigned to MS Hwy 145.
• A bypass around the east side of Meridian now exists. The old section came into town on 22nd ave., then out of town to the NE.
• A part of US 45 that is cosigned with US 82 just west of and into Columbus was abandoned and signed MS Hwy 182. A small section of road connecting MS 182 to the US 82-US 45 North exit may be signed MS Hwy 145, although no such designation is on the maps I reference.
• A long stretch of the former route exists from just south of Tupelo to north of Booneville.

Road Notes: The 4-laning of US 45 will eventually create an interstate-level connection between Mobile and Jackson, TN through the eastern corridor of the state connecting Corinth, Tupelo, Columbus and Meridian. Currently, three 4-lane sections have been completed: (1) 12 miles s. of Meridian to Scooba (2) Columbus to Aberdeen (3) 10 miles s. of Tupelo to TN State line

A portion of the route immediately north of I-10 and Gulfport was bypassed a short distance to the east during 4-laning.
The section north of Jackson was added later and part was signed MS 3.

Road Notes: The lower half of this route is all 4-laned but not Interstate status. It was the first 4-lane US Highway section to be completed in the state. It connects Mississippi's two main population centers - the State Capitol and the Gulf Coast. The north half traverses through the Delta and provides the only highway brdge crossing between Greeneville and Memphis.

Known Route changes:
• US 51 has been multiplexed with I-55 from near Terry, north to Ridgeland. The old route follows the I-55 frontage road south of I-20 and State Street through the downtown area.
• (Since it's my home town)I know that US 51 once ran through Winona along the railroad tracks. It is possible that monor movements in other towns have occured.

Road Notes: US 51 has been relegated to a minor route servicing local traffic in most of the state. The section between Vaiden and Canton carries heavy through traffic until the completion of I-55 in 1973. The trip from Grandmother's in Winona to other relatives in Jackson was a nightmare.

I received this email from Paschal Wilson who grep up in McComb: Although it appears when you're diriving north that Highway 51 directly becomes the frontage road and follows the interstate's path north of Terry, I believe the actual highway veered to the west of the interstate on what is now called Terry Road. Terry Road runs probably 10-12 miles before crossing Hwy. 80 and soon turning into Pascagoula Street, which runs into the heart of downtown from the west. That's the route that I think the original highway followed to get to State Street, which it then followed to the north from there. I don't have documents to back it up, but I think the signage that designated State St. as Hwy. 51 between Pascagoula and I-20/I-55 must have come along at a later date. Enter "Terry Road, Jackson, MS" at Yahoo maps for a visual that will probably make more sense than my attempts to explain.

Road Notes: US 61 is one of the routes slated for 4-laning throughout its length across the state. Should I-69 be built, this may replace the northern part of the 4-laned route. Current 4-lane sections are complete about 10 miles eaither side of Natchez, 23 miles south and 10 miles north of Vicksburg, from Leland to 6 miles north of Cleveland, from Clarksdale to where US 49 splits off to Arkansas, and portions between Tunica and teh state line are somewhat complete.

Natchez Trace Parkway

Road Notes: - This is a very scenic route for someone who wants to take their time and maybe picnic along the way. It is not a good route for someone in a hurry who is trying to shave a few miles. This road has a speed limit of 50MPH and it is patrolled by National Park police who give practically no slack. It is also a very desolate road at times, particularly at night. Rumors abound about drug runners using infrared vision to drive at 140MPH with their lights off. There are no gas stations, restaurants or anything else along the route except camping areas and other attractions. For facilities, you must get to an exit and even then, only in towns are there facilities nearby.
